Former US Vice President Mike Pence testified in court on Thursday about the violent storming of the Capitol building in Washington on January 6, 2021. US media reported this on Thursday.
CNN reported that Pence appeared before a federal grand jury in Washington on Thursday. Pence answered questions as a witness for more than five hours. Nothing is known about the content of his statements.
There is an ongoing investigation into former US President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Pence’s testimony is linked to the conversations he had with his boss before Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. The intention is to clarify what role Trump played at the time.
On the day of the House storming, Pence had to certify the election results as president of the Senate. Trump and his supporters wanted him not to because they believed the election was not fair.
Legal bickering
The testimony of the former vice president was preceded by much legal controversy. At the end of March, a judge ruled that De Pence must testify, but Trump has challenged that decision. A federal court had rejected the former president’s appeal on Wednesday.
It is the first time in modern US history that a former vice president has to testify about the president he worked with.
