Four children killed while fishing in Canada: the tide washed them away | outside

Four children were found dead on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River in the northern province of Quebec, Canada. On Saturday, local police said they were swept away by the tide while fishing.

“According to preliminary information, a group of 11 people were fishing capelin on foot along the coast when they were swept away by the tide,” the investigation told AFP.

Six people were rescued in time, of the other five, and there was no trace on the night from Friday to Saturday. A few hours later, four children, all over the age of ten, were found dead. Police said they were taken to hospital, where a doctor confirmed their deaths.

A man in his 30s is still missing. Various teams including divers, soldiers and helicopters were deployed to search for the man.

Quebec’s Minister of Public Security, François Bonardelle, called the situation an “unspeakable catastrophe” and tragedy during an interview with the Canadian Public Broadcasting Corporation.
