Team Europe has made a great start to the 44th Ryder Cup. After the first day of prestigious golf competition, the Europeans lead 6.5-1.5 against Team America. In the morning session, Europe was on top and they won all their matches.
The US recovered somewhat in the afternoon session. For long periods the US seemed to be holding on for a point or two, but Europe bounced back in the final holes. Team USA did not win a single match in the so-called match play format played in the Ryder Cup.
A point and a half for the US is three draws.
Alarm started in Rome. At 7.35am the golfers started the first holes in the sun. As the gates opened at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, thousands of golf fans flocked to the grandstands to get the best spot.
There was a football-like atmosphere in the stands, with European fans in particular cheering loudly on their continental counterparts. Tennis player Novak Djokovic also supported his home team in Italy. Here and there, fans from America stood dressed in stars and stripes, but there were plenty of them. And you can hear it. The European fans continued to cheer and cheer on the American fans.
Foursomes and fourballs
There are many different forms of golf played in the Ryder Cup, but they all follow a match play format. The team with the fewest strokes gets one point per hole. No matter how many tricks you lose, one bad ball will cost you a maximum of one point.
In the morning session, teams played in a four-man format. In four matches, two players from two teams play golf at a ball and take turns taking a shot.
Europe dominated. Won all four matches. A 4-0 lead after the first morning, A Great successIt was the best ever start for a European team in the Ryder Cup.
Golfers played four balls in the afternoon session. Both players in a team play their own ball and count the team’s best score. In this form, Americans were better able to get along with Europeans.
Americans Colin Morikawa and Sander Schaffel could do nothing against the European duo of Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Matt Fitzpatrick (England). They were already six points behind after seven holes. It ended prematurely as he scored 5 points on the final hole.
But the Americans upped their game at the end of the day on the second nine holes of the course in Rome. At one point, the duos of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, Scotty Scheffler and Brooks Koepke, and Max Homa and Wyndham Clark were all in the lead. But those guidelines were given.
A chip by Spaniard Jon Rahm (World No. 3) from the high fairway, a long putt by Norwegian Viktor Hovland (World No. 4) appeared to fall into the hole in slow motion, and then another impressive putt by Van Rahm on the eighteenth hole saw them close their deficit,
As the shadows lengthened and the sun set on the golf course in Rome, Justin Rose completed a disastrous day for America. In the last run of the day, with the last point, Englishman Robert MacIntyre took a point against Max Homma and Wyndham Clarke.
The Ryder Cup continues on Saturday, with another four-ball session in the morning and a four-ball session in the afternoon.
