Renewed gameplay
The original Silent Hill 2 is a legendary game, but it’s also over 20 years old. A lot can change in players’ preferences during that period. In terms of gameplay, Silent Hill 2 has been modified to resemble modern horror games.
In the original game, each camera angle for the player was determined by the game. The remake is more enlarged and goes for the over-the-shoulder perspective made popular by the original Resident Evil 4 (2005). It’s a change that many horror remakes go through: Resident Evil 2 and 3 originally had a fixed camera, just like Silent Hill 2 in the original, but got an over-the-shoulder perspective in their remakes.
Custom designs
But that does not appear to be the intent of the new designs. On social media, fans were quick to notice that Angela and Maria’s designs looked more like the initial sketches of their characters. This also probably says something about the rest of the game and often uses ideas that were deleted or modified in the original game. Unfortunately, it is still too early to know for sure.
Seeing a lot of complaints about Maria’s redesign in Silent Hill 2 Remake. It actually reminds me a bit of one of Sato’s initial character sketches!
I’m surprised they didn’t at least put some pink leopard print *somewhere* but at least she still has the butterfly tattoo and necklace! pic.twitter.com/qoGDxzMgGS

The original developers are on board
The Bloober team is not alone in making the new version. There’s a boost from two people who also worked on the original. It’s about Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka.
Ito was the creature designer in the original game, so he designed many of the game’s enemies. He has the same role in the remake. Yamaoka also plays the same role as he did in the original game, that of composer.
