It’s been known for some time that “Avatar: The Way of Water” is far from the end of the saga. There are at least three sequels planned, which are due in 2024, 2026, and 2028. But now the director on duty, James Cameron, is out with the news that large portions of “Avatar 3” and “Avatar 4” have already been released canned. “It’s also very timely,” we hear you say, but Cameron had good reason for that, he admits to Entertainment Weekly.
This decision has to do with the growth spurts of the young actors. Cameron wanted to avoid making the younger cast members look “too old” in later films. For example, in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the character Spider (played by Jack Champion) is introduced. He was barely 12 years old when he was cast, but the young star is now 18. “Otherwise you get a ‘Stranger Things’ effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school but look like they’re 27.” He definitely didn’t want to throw mud at the series. “I love the Stranger Things song and that’s okay. We’ll suspend our disbelief because we love the characters.” But it seems like Cameron wanted to do things differently for his “Avatar” movies.
Avatar: The Way of Water is now in cinemas.
