France started the Olympics in their home country with an easy victory. It was 0-0 at half-time, but Thierry Henry’s men rolled over America in the second half. Veteran player and captain Alexandre Lacazette won the match with a goal and an assist.
On the first day of the Olympic football tournament, France immediately proved that it will compete for the main bird. America had to be sidelined at Marseilles.
But the task was not so simple in the first half. The game went back and forth, but neither side could score.
After the break, it was the Americans who were able to really threaten for the first time. Djordje Mihailović smashed the ball over the crossbar from outside the box.
I could do it a little better, Alexandre Lacazette thought at the hour mark. The French captain quickly got away from his man and picked the far side of the net with a hard slide from 20 meters: 1-0 to the host nation.
Within 10 minutes, the same side net was torpedoed again. Lacazette was around 16 when he played for Michel Ollis, who proved why FC Bayern Munich poached him from Crystal Palace this summer.
The winger beautifully curled the ball into the far corner. The game was played with a double lead.
Just before the whistle, Loic Pate made it 3-0 with a corner kick. France started their tournament with a bang. A new Test awaits against Guinea on Saturday.
