Local media reported based on statements by Iranian authorities that more than 260 people were arrested in Iran on Saturday. The arrests came exactly one year after the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who was killed in detention, sparking a wave of protests in the country at the time.
Through the arrests, the Iranian authorities wanted to prevent renewed protests. Al-Sharq newspaper reported on Sunday that the arrests took place within 24 hours and the number of arrests reached 260 people. The security authorities said that the arrests were due to public security violations, incitement to protests, and possession of weapons.
It was announced on Saturday that one of the detainees was Masha’s father, Amjad Amini. After his arrest, he was told that he was not allowed to speak publicly about his daughter’s death.
