Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's party boycotted a parliament meeting regarding Sweden's accession to NATO. For this reason, Sweden's membership must be postponed again. “It is very disturbing,” the opposition said.
Orban's party, Fidesz, last week demanded that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visit Hungary first before the country agrees to Sweden joining NATO. Kristersson responded that he would not visit Hungary until the country gave the green light for Swedish membership.
Because members of the ruling party were not present for the vote, it was not possible to proceed with the ratification of Sweden's membership. The next date is February 26 when Parliament returns from recess.

“Very unpleasant”
Hungarian Green Party lawmaker Matej Kanáš-Nagy complained to an empty room that it was “very unfortunate” that Fidesz continued to block Sweden's accession to NATO. The public exhibition was attended by a number of ambassadors of NATO countries, including ambassadors of the United States.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Finland was already accepted last year. Hungary is the last country that has not yet ratified Sweden's membership. Turkey also refused to agree for a long time, but in January, the Turkish Parliament finally approved Sweden's membership.
