Hungary to withdraw housing from Ukrainian refugees who do not live in war zones

The new law was signed in June and recently came into effect. The Hungarian government has listed 13 Ukrainian regions where “the war against Russia is raging.” This means that fighting is ongoing or the area is regularly bombed.

Other counties, mainly in the west and center of the country, are said to be safe enough, according to the government. As a Ukrainian refugee, anyone with an official address in those areas loses the right to housing and monthly income in Hungary. According to human rights organizations, the first Ukrainians have already been evicted from their homes.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, there are approximately 46,000 Ukrainian refugees in Hungary. The vast majority of these people will pay for their accommodation themselves or live with their families. About 4,000 refugees are under-resourced and therefore receive government support. About 3,000 people will be affected by the new measure.

A large proportion of these people are said to be Roma and hold dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizenship. Since they are also Hungarian citizens, they will not be able to find housing in other EU countries.
