New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for parts of the US state due to Hurricane Henry, including New York City, Long Island and some other areas. In the United States, a state of emergency is often declared out of prudence, because powers move from the federal to the regional level.
“New Yorkers, please, take it seriously, think about Hurricane Sandy,” Cuomo said at a news conference on Saturday. It is hoped that the effects of the tornado expected on Sunday will not be as bad as they were in 2012, but this is not a certainty. For New York City, Como expects nothing but heavy rain and some minor flooding.
Tropical Storm Henry, which was headed toward the northeastern United States, became a hurricane on Saturday morning, the US Meteorological Service. The Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for parts of Long Island and Connecticut. Henri will likely land on Sunday afternoon local time.
Mexico
Tropical Storm Grace caused flooding and blackouts in eastern Mexico. On Saturday, Governor Quitlahuac García Jimenez announced in about 25 municipalities in the state of Veracruz that trees were uprooted, electricity poles fell and streets were flooded.
Utility company CFE reported that more than half a million people were temporarily without power. Several flights were canceled due to the storm.
On Thursday, Grace traveled through the Yucatan Peninsula, popular with vacationers. The storm caused damage, but there were no injuries.
