Hurricane Ida cost 80 billion euros abroad

Costs after Hurricane Ida passed through the northeastern United States were $95 billion (€80 billion). This is according to Accueather’s US Weather Service estimates.

The hurricane caused devastation in New Orleans in the southern United States. In the Northeast, Ida caused torrential rains and catastrophic flooding in New York and several states.

According to Joel N. Myers, founder and CEO of Accuweather, the cost is at least $95 billion across the United States. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s, puts it at $50 billion. That’s half the cost of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, according to Zandi.

Hurricane Ida is also affecting the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States. “This certainly complicates the situation as a significant number of employees have been returning to the office after more than a year to stop working from home,” Zandi said. The damage to public transportation is also great.

US President Joe Biden visited parts of the affected area this weekend. Next week it will head to the stricken areas of the northeastern United States, where the slopes of the hurricane wreaked havoc.
