Jonas Vingegaard exited the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country badly damaged. The Visma-Lease a Bike Tour winner suffered a broken collarbone and several broken ribs in a mass fall that also injured Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic. On Friday, a collapsed lung and lung contusions were also added to that medical chart.
It has become a horror stage in the Tour of the Basque Country. The favorite group fell into relegation. Remco Evenepoel had to give up, but he was still able to stand up. Just like Primoz Roglic. He got into a regular car and noted that the damage wasn't too bad.
Jonas Vengegard and Jay Vine seem to be in much worse shape. The leader of Visma-Lease a Bike remained lying on his left side for a long time. His clothes were completely torn, and wounds were visible on his body. He was then taken out on a stretcher and also given oxygen.
“When we got to him, we immediately saw that things were not looking good,” says sporting director Adi Engels. He added: “Fortunately, he was conscious. His condition is now being evaluated in the hospital, and we are awaiting updates.”
The medical balance ultimately proved difficult for the Dane. He broke his collarbone and several ribs and also suffered a collapsed lung and a contused lung. Vingegaard remains in hospital as a precaution.
