celebritiesFor the first time, non-binary actors have received an award during the presentation of the Tony Awards, America’s most prestigious music and theater awards. J. Harrison Ghee (33) received an award for his leading role in Some Like It Hot, and Alex Newell (30) received an award for his supporting role in the musical ‘Shucked’.

The musical Kimberly Akimbo, starring Victoria Clarke, was the first winner of five awards at the 76th Tony Awards in New York. The story of a teenager who ages five times faster than usual was honored in the categories “Best Musical”, “Best Musical” and “Best Actress in a Musical”.

But J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell have also gotten a lot of attention. For the first time, the organization has given awards to non-binary actors. Harrison G won Best Actor for his lead role in Some Like It Hot, and Alex Newell won a Tony for his supporting role in Shuked. “To anyone who thinks they don’t have it, I want to tell you that you can do anything if you want to,” said Newell, who achieved his breakthrough with a role on Glee.

“Leopoldstadt,” a drama about the Holocaust written by 85-year-old British playwright Tom Stoppard, won the Tony Award for Best Play.

Just like last year, the ceremony was presented by the American actress Ariana DeBose.
