showbizIt happened. After more than ten thousand views, Gert Verholst no longer owns Samson. At Studio 100 Pop-Up Theater in Bourse, he finally passed the torch to his daughter Mary (26) last night. She was fine with Koen Crucke for many tears, while Gert remained in control of his emotions until the last note. “But if this is ‘The Sound Of Music’, then I can’t keep it dry,” apparently.
September 2, 1990. “Samson & Gert” began to be shown on the public broadcaster. Nearly 32 years later it’s over for Gert Verholst (54). “I knew for some time I was going to pass the torch to Mary, and all the closures gave me plenty of time to get used to the idea,” says the former Samson owner. Geert does not regret his decision. “It is time to pass the torch.”
And Geert did it incomparable way last night. In the nineties – and the last – he did his best. It has become a great show filled with Samson songs from the past and present, with the necessary jokes from the man himself† For example, the audience present was given a “Gert” mask to wear during “Morning Gymnastics”. It happened en masse. “Keep up the work, it’s better this way,” he seemed to laugh after. The synergy between Geert and Quinn ‘Alberto Kroc’ (70), Walter ‘Mayor’ de Donder (61) and Walter ‘Van Lemhozen’ Bailey (57) remained entertaining until the last minute. Thanks in part to stagnant moments of laughter and burning jokes for the Quartet. “It’s okay, it’s the nine o’clock show,” Walter Bailey said after hinting at Hot Marijke.

It’s time for tradition
Geert’s farewell also means a new beginning for Samson. At the end of the show, Mary appeared as the new owner, and her schedule was instantly filled out. This is how Samson and Mary continue the tradition with their Christmas show. Together with Van Leemhuyzen, Alberto and Mayor, the duo experience their first adventure during the Christmas holidays. They will do so from December 26, and at three different locations: Plopsa Theater in De Panne, Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp and Trixxo Theater in Hasselt.
