For the song “Papa,” which she says she wrote after the christening of the Reuzegom student club that killed Sanda Dia, Straat had two crew members walk on stage with signs reading “Justice for Sanda Dia.” “This song is about the future leaders of our country, because in what world is a human life worth 400 euros?” Her statement was met with loud cheers, after which Straat began her song about Reuzegommers.
“Baba” lyrics:
You have drinks in the club
Necktie jacket and tie d
Your dad has been friends since college
I’ve been drowning in money since childhood
Did you go too far?
My money is gone again
What did you do
Dad, have you already made the deposit?
I raised her again
Now there is only one thing left
Dad will save you
Dad will save you
Nothing can happen to you
Dad will save you
You wake up on the floor next to the sofa
There’s vomit and glass and butts and it smells like booze
I’m still drunk from the day before
And suddenly you remember what happened last night
What did you do
He fell off the boat
Peter Hazd
And now he died
I raised her again
Now there is only one thing left
Dad will save you
Dad will save you
Nothing can happen to you
Dad will save you
Straat has already played the song at several shows this summer festival, including Best Secret Dutch Song, but also at Suikerrock in our country. She is known for her socially critical songs, such as “Tweede Kamer”, a duet with Goldband in which she deplores the lack of women in politics, and “It sucks to be a cop”, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” which talks about police brutality.
