Investigation into ‘insecurity’ at space company Bezos | Science

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is opening an investigation into allegations of insecurity at Blue Origin, the space company of billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. According to a group of (former) employees, Blue Origin often prioritizes speed and cost savings over resources for quality assurance when making decisions.

The driving force behind these allegations is an employee who claims he was unfairly fired two years ago. But it doesn’t matter who exactly the allegations are coming from, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Any claims regarding security are taken seriously.

In addition to questionable safety options, Blue Origin is also said to have a “toxic” workplace culture. Additionally, a high-profile driver could have been accused of sexual misconduct multiple times a few years ago. However, nothing could be done about it.

‘The safest spacecraft ever’

Blue Origin said in a response that it would investigate the new allegations of misconduct. The company also asserts that the New Shepard is “the safest spacecraft ever.”

Last summer, wealthy Bezos also ventured into space with the New Shepard. Blue Origin wants to sell cruise tours to the edge of the atmosphere. Bezos is engaged in fierce competition with other billionaires such as Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic) and Elon Musk (SpaceX) who have also indulged in space tourism.
