Israel will open a second aid checkpoint to Gaza on Tuesday at the request of the United States. This way, the Israeli army can check more trucks and therefore bring more aid supplies to Gaza.
The checkpoint will be at Kerem Shalom, the border area between Israel and Gaza. After the test, the trucks head to Rafah, on the border between Egypt and Gaza. That’s where the trucks enter Gaza.
The US has been urging Israel for weeks to open additional checkpoints for aid supplies. Until now, Israel controlled all Gaza-bound trucks at Nitsana, the border area between Israel and Egypt. From there the trucks went to Rafah.
A new checkpoint in Kerem Shalom will allow additional trucks carrying aid to be checked. As at the border post in Nitsana, the Israelis will conduct security checks on trucks intended to bring food, water and medical supplies to civilians in Gaza.
“Simultaneous security checks at the Kerem Shalom and Nitzana crossings will double the amount of aid delivered through the Rafah crossing and allowed into the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli government said. X.
Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that Kerem Shalom would open as a second border crossing between Israel and Gaza. Not so. After the inspection, the trucks have to go through Egypt to Rafah. That is where the trucks cross the border. Message edited.
