Marta Cavalli (FDG) has attracted the best candidates in the Amstel Gold Women’s Race. The 24-year-old Italian walked away from the elite group just after Kauberg and set out on her own – cutting her legs and the necessary horsepower – to achieve the most beautiful victory of her career. A somewhat upset Demi Follering (SD Worx) won second place in a few seconds.
A powerful pioneer group including Vollering and Van Vleuten
The pace was very high from the start, which made attacking in the opening stage very difficult.
On Eyserbosweg, the race was completely interrupted by an attack from Niewiadoma. A select group of riders including Brand, Van Vleuten and Vollering split, but got a little peloton space.
The moment they were caught, Van Vleuten gave the order again. Only Vollering and Niewiadoma could follow her. Van den Broek-Blaak, Van Dijk, Lippert and Henderson were able to make the connection moments later.
Then the yo-yo started in the game. Every time the seven seemed to have been caught, they ran again. 35 km from the end was the end of the story for the leaders.
Cavalli surprises the best candidates
In the final we had one attack after another. Rojakers, Sierra, and Sprats were the first to try. Garcia wanted to drive to the trio, but got stuck in the famous Patate chase. 10 kilometers from the end they were caught by a peloton again.
Fischer-Black, Rosser, Paladin, and Burgley were also unable to escape from the herd.
On the last lane of Cauberg, Van Vleuten immediately opened the throttle. She appeared first, followed by Niewiadoma, Cavalli, Garcia, Vollering, Moolman-Pasio and Lippert.
At the top there was a moment of silence. Cavalli took advantage of the moment and made an attack. The chase came too late, in part due to a minor communication glitch in SD Worx.
The 24-year-old Italian managed to stay out of the hands of the stalkers and single for the most beautiful victory of her career.
It turns out that Vollering has the fastest two legs in the sprint. Lippert was allowed to take another podium spot. Van Vleuten became the fourth.
