There was no quality football to be enjoyed in Stayen on Saturday evening, but that won't keep people awake at STVV. In the lead-up to next Wednesday's trip to Standard, the Canaries snatched a vital three points against Charleroi. Jarne Steuckers could only find a hole in the black and white's defense ten minutes before the whistle.
Both teams could still use the points before the start of the new year, so it remains to be seen who will take the lead. The study tour ultimately lasted twenty minutes. Top scorer Quetta hit another powerful shot, as usual, but his long free kick was blocked by Kofi. Kaya's header was not sharp enough to threaten Kofi. The team gained possession of the ball, but continued to be wary of counterattacks. Charleroi regained balance, and shortly after the half-hour mark, two attempts from Guyajon and Debbagh suddenly disappeared near the goal frame. 0-0 at half-time was a logical result, because there wasn't much enthusiasm in Steyn.
The second half did not improve immediately. It was another fifteen minutes of waiting for the first goal to be threatened. Eto'o met Kofi's fists, but Heymans cleared Kaya's rebound off the goal line. The German striker remained dangerous, as soon after he again found Kofi in his path and then kicked wide of the frame. Charleroi continued to wait for the counter. 15 minutes before the end, Ben Bouali tried to bring in the other substitute, Mbenza, but Wolki Janssens was still between them. The score could have been 0-1 in reality.
The opening goal eventually fell to the hosts. Bocat put a cross from DeLorge ready at Jarni Stokers' feet and scored 1-0 from close range. The final attack from Charleroi failed to deliver, so the young STVV team took another step in the right direction. Coach Felice Mazo's team remains in the danger zone.
