The ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (60 years old), Mackenzie Scott (53 years old), continues to sell Amazon shares worth billions of dollars. It sold 65.3 million shares in the group last year. After her high-profile divorce from Bezos in 2019, Scott acquired a 4% stake in Amazon, instantly making her one of the richest women in the world. She promised to donate half of her fortune to charity. It has already donated billions, but it is not getting poorer.
The shares Scott sold last year were about a quarter of her stake in Amazon. Their combined wealth reached $10.4 billion, equivalent to more than 9.5 billion euros, when stock markets closed on Friday. Scott could not be reached for comment.
More than $16.5 billion has been donated
The philanthropist has now donated more than $16.5 billion (€15.2 billion) to charities. For example, in 2020, it donated more than $4 billion to food banks and emergency aid due to the Corona crisis. It was announced last December that Scott had made an additional $2.15 billion in donations in 2023 through her Yield Giving Foundation. The organization transferred these funds to a total of 360 different organizations.
Not poorer
Although Scott has sold and donated billions of dollars worth of Amazon stock in recent years, her net worth currently stands at $42.6 billion (€39.2 billion), according to Forbes. The value of the package obtained by the novelist, who was married to Bezos for 25 years in the divorce, was about 36 billion dollars (33 billion euros) at the time. She's getting richer because the value of Amazon's stock has skyrocketed compared to 2019.
Bezos said two years ago that he also wanted to donate a “majority” of his money to charity. He stated that he mainly wanted to donate money to fight climate change.
