Singer-songwriter John Oates, best known for the duo Hall & Oates, will receive the BMI Troubadour Award in September. The award goes to a songwriter who has “made a significant impact on the creative community and is an inspiration to future generations,” according to a BMI press release.
“John Oates has enriched the music scene with his unique blend of soulful lyrics and guitar playing,” said Clay Bradley, Chief Creative Officer, BMI Nashville. “His influence has opened up our community to all types of music and we are proud to honor him as this year’s BMI Troubadour.”
Oates has dozens of hits, most of them with Daryl Hall. The duo produced 21 albums and scored hits with Rich Girl, Maneater, I Can’t Go For That, and Out of Touch. Today, Hall and Oates are in a business dispute.
Previous BMI Troubadour Award winners include Billy Gibbons, John Hiatt, John Prine, Robert Earl Keen and Lucinda Williams. Oates will receive the award at a special event in Nashville. In addition to the ceremony, there will be tribute performances and memorial speeches from special guests.
