MusicThe Eurovision Song Contest winner Kalush Orchestra is disappointed that the music festival will not be held in Ukraine next year. The group announced this in an interview with “Metro UK”. “I am disappointed. We were hoping that the Eurovision Song Contest would be held in Ukraine next year,” said Oleg Psyuk, the band’s leader.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the event’s overall organizer, has no plans to change its mind. The organization said in a statement that it was still behind its decision. According to the organizer, their job is to ensure that the event runs safely. “Normally, at least 10,000 people are certified to work in or on the song contest, including crew, staff and journalists. An additional 30,000 fans from around the world are expected to travel to the event. Their well-being is our top priority.”

In the statement, the EBU also refers to the official rules of the competition, which state that the song competition can be moved “in the event of force majeure”, such as an ongoing war. The regulators also sought advice from third parties. For example, Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, believes that the war “could go on for years.” According to the same EBU, no major concerts will be held in Ukraine in 2023. “All of this contributes to our overall assessment.” The organizers say they understand Ukraine’s disappointment and that they made the decision with a heavy heart.
Last week, the European Broadcasting Union’s umbrella organizer announced that it did not consider holding the event there to be safe given the war in Ukraine. The organizer also announced that they are currently in talks with the BBC, this year’s runner-up. However, according to British media, there is also another possibility: Brussels, the capital of Europe.
