Kim Jong-un sets new military targets in North Korea | abroad

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced new military targets at the annual meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party. So says the state press agency. These new targets raise concerns about new weapons tests next year.

KCNA said the North Korean leader had set “major new goals to enhance self-defense capabilities,” without providing further details.

Kim Jong Un currently presides over a large annual meeting of the Workers’ Party in the capital, Pyongyang. In a report, according to the Korean Central News Agency, the leader analyzed and assessed “the new difficult situation on the Korean Peninsula.” He stressed the “struggle against the enemy” and the party should join him.

Record number of weapons tests

North Korea has conducted a record number of weapons tests this year, including the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles. But UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles. It can be equipped with a nuclear warhead.

In recent years, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has used the meeting to outline his policies on foreign affairs, security and the economy, in place of his New Year’s speech. The meeting’s agenda also includes an analysis of the policies implemented in 2022 and the next year’s budget.
