Lab-grown chicken could soon be on sale in the US

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved two companies to sell lab-grown chicken. A ministry spokesperson said on June 21, after inspecting the food hygiene of reverse foods and good meat. Both the companies are announcing that their products will soon be available in a few restaurants

In November last year, the two companies had already received the green light from the Food Safety Agency, the FDA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also approved label compliance last week. “This approval will fundamentally change the way meat ends up on our plates,” said Uma Valetti, founder and CEO of Upside Foods.

Sustainable future

In a press release he also talks about a ‘giant step towards a more sustainable future’. Shortly after the approval, Upside Foods already received its first order from French chef Dominique Gren, who owns a three-star restaurant in San Francisco with Atelier Gren. At Good Meat, expect to order from José Andrés, who runs the Washington DC minibar, and is awarded two Michelin stars.
