Assange has been persecuted for nearly a quarter of a century and has been held in London's maximum-security Belmarsh prison since 2019. In 2020, extradition proceedings to the United States began. He published classified information mainly on political and military affairs. The site appears to have been shut down since late 2022. According to WikiLeaks, this is due to Washington, which prevents further dissemination of WikiLeaks' information and puts pressure on donors.

WikiLeaks caused a stir in 2016 by releasing tens of thousands of emails from the Democratic Party leadership in the United States. It shows that the board, along with Hillary Clinton campaign staff, wanted to ignore left-wing politician Bernie Sanders. However, Assange has been prosecuted in the US for numerous publications about the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This includes war crimes committed there.
In 2010, Assange was identified as a suspect in the sexual abuse of two women in Sweden. Based on this he was arrested in London. He was released on bail but disappeared fearing a US fraud trap at the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital. They showed him the door in 2019 and he's been stuck ever since.
