While Donald Trump grabbed all the attention at the Republican convention, his Democratic rival Joe Biden was isolated in his home state of Delaware. It was announced yesterday that the President has contracted the Corona virus.
Republicans have united themselves behind the figure of Donald Trump, but there doesn’t seem to be any unity behind Joe Biden among Democrats. Since a nasty debate with Trump in late June, the 81-year-old Biden has come under increased and apparent pressure to withdraw his candidacy.
But Biden doesn’t want to budge. Not for now anyway. “According to reports we’re hearing, Biden may announce his intention to drop out of the race on Sunday, although nothing is certain about that,” says American correspondent Bjorn Sonnens. “His campaign staff continues to act as if nothing has happened, but the battle is well underway.”
More and more prominent figures in the Democratic Party and the White House are determined to keep the honor for Biden. Some do this openly, others anonymously in the American media. The pressure will be very high.
“Biden seems to be giving up on the polls where people are coming to him saying, ‘You’re going to lose seats, and you’re going to drag everybody down.’ “The tragedy of it is enormous,” says Sonnens.
“He feels he’s run an amazing course and now he can’t do that. We’ll see what happens.”
