Live Blog – US Uses Veto During Security Council, 17,400 Palestinians Killed Since October 7

Today the UN Security Council is voting on a resolution for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. However, polling was adjourned at 11.30 pm.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has already addressed the Security Council. He has already taken several steps to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip. For example, he recently invoked UN Article 99 and pointed out that “nowhere in Gaza is safe”.

UN During his speech to the Security Council, Guterres indicated that he would call for a complete ceasefire. He pointed out that further escalation of the war was a risk and a possibility “leaking”, the possibility of the conflict spreading to other countries. “In my view, there is a clear and serious danger to the maintenance of international peace and security.”

Guterres again strongly condemned the October 7 attack by Hamas, describing it as “barbaric”. Nevertheless, the Secretary-General also points out that “Hamas’ brutal attack does not justify the collective punishment of Palestinians.”

“Intensive shelling and hostilities, Israeli movement restrictions, fuel shortages and disrupted communications make it impossible for UN agencies and their partners to reach most of the people in need.”

“Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are on the brink of an abyss,” Guterres told the Security Council. “The eyes of the world and of history are upon you. It’s time for action.”
