In July, it was announced that the UK would hold the Eurovision Song Contest next year, and now more is known about exactly where that will take place. A map of seven cities shared on Instagram are “seven exciting cities”: Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield. One of these cities will host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023. The capital itself, London, is not an option.
Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest in May last year by entering the Kalush Orchestra with the song “Stefania”. Normally, the winning country could organize the song contest the following year, but due to the war with Russia, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) decided otherwise. The UK, which finished second with Sam Ryder and “Cosmonaut”, will host the event “On behalf of Ukraine”. Ukraine can qualify directly for the Grand Final next year, along with the “Big Five” (Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom). They will also be closely involved in the organization of the event. “We are grateful for the UK’s willingness to organize it on our behalf,” said Orchestra vocalist Kalish Ole Psiuk.
