look. ‘He was full on the ankle’: Frank De Bleecker believes VAR was right for intervention during penalty phase at Anderlecht-RWDM | Jupiler Professional League – Round 15

“You can look at that stage in two ways,” says Tim Potts. “Guy comes dangerously with the studs towards the ball – and ends up on Delaney’s foot. He also hits the ball, but only when Delaney hits it. From that perspective, the penalty is justified. Guy, on the other hand, puts his foot to block the ball. “That’s exactly it – they found Delaney kicking Jay’s foot. There’s something to be said for that too. And because it’s not clear, I certainly don’t think it’s a clear foul. And the VAR intervention was inappropriate.”

Frank de Bleeckerie sees it differently. “The VAR saw that Guy wanted to go to the ball with his leg straight. It was actually too late, because the skin had already left Delaney’s foot,” he says on behalf of the referees’ management. “Guy does touch the ball, but in a dangerous maneuver with the attackers he also hits the ankle. When the VAR called Eric Lambrechts to the screen, he did not need much time for the penalty whistle. A justified decision that we support.”

Dreyer successfully executed the penalty kick before Vazquez gave Anderlecht the three points in the end (2-1).
