“Man and force are working to prevent the fire from spreading,” says a spokesperson for Dutch Omroep West, which has added extra broadcasts. According to him, firefighters are being hampered by the influx of people who come to watch the fire. As a result, the extinguishing process did not go well at first, according to the spokesperson.
People were even putting up chairs outside to watch the fire from a comfortable position, Safety Zone says.
The fire started around 9:30 pm in a wooden yard in a mall, after which the fire spread to other buildings, including a furniture store. Several explosions could be heard during the fire. According to the Hollands Maiden Safety District, these come from gas cylinders. The explosions subsided around 12:30 midnight. An NL alert has also been sent. This is an alarm device issued by the Dutch government to inform people in the neighborhood of an emergency
There will also be burning solar panels. This allows glass particles to fall from the sky. “These are not toxic, but they are sharp,” said the security district, which says residents can carefully clean the particles themselves.
Mayor Robert Jan van Duygen saw with his own eyes how the fire spread this evening and night. “At a safe distance, I was able to see with my own eyes how the emergency services are working hard to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading. I sympathize with the affected entrepreneurs,” he wrote on Twitter.
On social media, people are posting pictures of black clouds that can be seen far outside Ter Aar, such as in Noordwijk, Zoetermeer, Gouda, Haarlem and Amsterdam. Pictures of cinder blocks that go slightly downhill from Ter Aar, such as in Rijnsburg and on Katwijk beach, are also shared.
