An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred near Pahala on the island of Hawaii, according to the US Geological Survey. The depth is estimated at about 37 kilometers.
“A tsunami is not expected. But many areas likely experienced strong tremors,” the USGS said.
The largest US island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island, is regularly hit by explosions and earthquakes. There are six volcanoes in the archipelago and more than 200,000 people live there.
Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano in the world. At the end of 2022, Mauna Loa erupted again after almost forty years, with impressive flows of molten rock and lava fountains up to 60 meters high.
Kilauea, its smaller neighbour, erupted almost continuously between 1983 and 2019, and is a popular attraction for tourists who fly over it by helicopter. In 2018, lava flows destroyed more than 700 homes.
