Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has paid the bill for four Italian tourists who left an Albanian restaurant without paying. The incident came to her attention during a visit to Albania. It was alleged that the Prime Minister ordered the Italian ambassador – with Meloni’s personal money – to “pay the bill for these fools”.
The incident involving the Italian tourists took place in the Albanian city of Berat. They ate in a restaurant, but left without paying the 80 euro bill.
During Meloni’s visit to Albania, the incident was reportedly brought up by her Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama. In response, the Prime Minister instructed the Italian ambassador to begin paying the outstanding bill. The Italian Embassy in Albania confirmed that it had paid the bill. “Italians respect the rules and pay their debts, and we hope that this type of incident will not happen again,” the embassy said.
After the first report, the Italians expressed a lot of criticism. They felt that their tax money was not meant for this type of business. The embassy explained that, contrary to rumours, the bill was not paid by the Italian state, but by Meloni’s personal money.
Homeland pride
According to Francesco Lollobrigida, the Italian Minister of Agriculture, it was a matter of national pride. He was traveling in Albania with Meloni. Lollobrigida told Reuters that the ambassador himself offered to foot the bill. The Minister of Agriculture said: “The ambassador was on his way to Tirana (a city about 100 km from Berat, ed.) and was ready to do so. A few dishonest individuals cannot embarrass a nation of decent people.”
It was the first time customers left the restaurant without paying, the owner told Albania Report TV. Even the Italians have complimented the food. It was not clear exactly when the accident occurred.
