WTA Finals 4th seed Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova had already swayed in the group stage with 3 wins and started the semi-finals as favorites against Desira Krausek and Demi Schurz.
Mertens predicted a “not an easy match,” but that prediction did not materialize. In no time were they dancing the American-Dutch duo: after 5 breaks, there were 6-1, 6-1 numbers on the scoreboard.
Just like last year, Mertens reached the final of the doubles at the WTA Finals. Then she lost to the Czech duo with Taiwanese Hsieh Su Wei Barbora Krejsikova and Katerina Senyakova.
And Mertens has a chance of revenge, because now the defending champions are the contenders in the final. Earlier today, they beat Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.
Mertens and Koidermetova won the WTA 500 tournament in Dubai earlier this year, but also lost 3 finals in Doha, Miami and Rosmalen. The challenge will be huge against Krejcikova and Siniakova, who have lost only 3 times this season. The Czechs have won three Grand Slam titles and could cap their dominant year with another prestigious award.
