Microsoft launches the fastest PC from its own stable: the Surface Laptop Studio 2

The new Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 uses the latest Intel chipset and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 series graphics card. The design remains almost unchanged.

When the first Surface Laptop Studio saw the light of day two years ago, we initially had to wait in Belgium. Six months later, on February 22, 2022, we got the green light. Six months later, a replacement with the same long name became available: the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2.

Little has changed outside. The most striking feature, the screen that you can also attach in front of the keyboard, remains the same 14.4-inch touchscreen (2400 x 1600 pixels, 120 Hz).

The structure has not changed either, only the number of ports is now a little more spacious: 2x USB-C (Thunderbolt 4), 1x USB-A (USB 3.1), Surface port, jack connector and microSD card slot. No doubt creative professionals would have preferred to see a full SD card slot.

New devices

The biggest improvements are inside. Microsoft is putting Intel’s latest 13th generation chip (Intel Core i7-13700H) in the Surface Laptop Studio 2. For the first time, the laptop also has an Intel NPU, the Movidius 3700VC AI Accelerator.

All of this is backed by either an integrated Intel Xe graphics card or an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 model. In Belgium, you can only order the Intel Xe variant through Microsoft or one with an RTX 4050 on board. Models with the professional RTX 4060 or RTX 2000 Ada Generation are not available through Microsoft, but may be available through official B2B channels with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed.

Models are available with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of RAM (LPDDR5x) and 512GB or 1TB of storage (NVMe PCIe 4.0). According to Microsoft, the version with the Intel GPU will have up to 19 hours of battery life, with the Nvidia card up to 18 hours.

Price and availability

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 will be available starting October 3. Prices start at €2,239 for the base model with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics. Anyone who wants an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 will pay at least €2,719. The high-end version with RTX 4050, 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD costs 3,199 euros. All prices include VAT.

Other configurations are only available in B2B-focused stores. Pricing and availability are not yet known.
