Van Uytvanck and Menen battle their way to the 1/8 final
Great Minin and Alison van Uytvanck qualified for the eighth finals in the doubles competition at the US Open on Friday in New York. In the second round, they took the measure of Australian Elaine Perez and Czech Kvita Peszek in 1 hour 42 minutes 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
In order to secure a place in the quarter-finals, Menin and Van Uytvanck may meet world number one Elise Mertens. Along with Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei, he is the number one seed on the hard court at Flushing Meadows.
Gilles and Fliggen quickly took the first hurdle
Sander Gilly and Joran Fliegen qualified for the second round of doubles at the US Open on Wednesday. And the 16-ranked teams beat Belarusian Ilya Ivashka and Spain’s Jaume Munnar in an hour and two minutes in the opening round, 6-3 twice.
In the second round, Gilli and Fligen, who reached the quarter-finals in New York last year, will meet British-Pakistani duo Johnny O’Mara/Issam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who defeated Ecuadorean Uruguayan Ariel Behar/Gonzalo Escobar 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
