Taking a short nap every day may contribute to healthy aging. Getting enough sleep during the day would ensure brain volume decreases less quickly, scientists determined after examining data from more than 35,000 people. Sleeping during the day can also limit the damage caused by sleeping problems at night.
Scientists at University College London and the National University of Uruguay collected data from more than 35,000 people who took part in the UK Biobank Study, a large-scale study looking at the genetic, lifestyle and health information of nearly 500,000 people between the ages of 40 and 69. year used. The researchers examined whether a set of genetic variants previously associated with self-reported daytime napping habits were also associated with brain size and other aspects of brain health.
The team found a link between a genetic predisposition to napping during the day and an increase in brain size, which equates to 2.6 to 6.5 years less aging. However, they were unable to show an association with cognitive performance such as faster reaction times. “Short naps during the day can help preserve brain volume, and this may be positive in terms of preventing dementia,” said Victoria Garfield, a researcher at University College London and co-author of the study.
For those who want to implement a new healthy habit right away, the researchers have another important piece of advice that stems from past research: Napping should last no longer than 30 minutes.
