New top Ukrainian general says he wants to change approach to war | Ukraine-Russia war

New Ukrainian General Oleksandr Sirsky said the armed forces needed a new approach to winning the war with Russia. The Army Commander said in his first statements since assuming office: “Only continuous changes and improvements in the means and methods of warfare are capable of making our mission a success.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky replaced former Armed Forces commander Valery Zalozny on Thursday and appointed Sersky as his successor. This is the largest change in military leadership since Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago. The 58-year-old general was already commander of the ground forces.

Sersky will now be tasked with breaking the stalemate on the front lines. He says that the army needs “clear and detailed plans” and stresses that the Ukrainians cannot do without the weapons of Western allies. These deliveries look increasingly less certain.

High numbers of casualties

Siersky does not have the same national fame as Zalozny, but he is known in military circles for being undeterred by the large numbers of casualties among the troops. He seems to want to downplay that reputation: “The lives and well-being of our soldiers are and will always be the most important assets of the Ukrainian army.”
