Omar al-Bashir, the former head of state of Sudan, who ruled the country with an iron fist, will be treated in a military hospital in the capital, Khartoum. This is what military sources say. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court.
Sudan’s military posted a message on Facebook, Wednesday, saying that the 79-year-old Bashir was in hospital and under police surveillance. The information cannot be confirmed by independent sources.
On Tuesday, there were conflicting reports about the whereabouts of Al-Bashir. Al-Bashir ruled the country with an iron fist for thirty years. He was held in Kober prison in Khartoum after being convicted of corruption. He is also being tried for the 1989 coup at the beginning of his rule.
According to media reports, the prison police released prisoners last weekend. They can no longer guarantee basic care.
Genocide
Since 2009, the International Criminal Court has been searching for al-Bashir, who is accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur conflict. Reports of al-Bashir have emerged as a power struggle rages in Sudan between the army and paramilitary forces. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto president of the country and commander-in-chief of the army, wants to use the armed forces to overthrow his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Dagalo is the leader of an influential paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The two generals lead the country, which has a population of 46 million, after two joint military coups in 2019 and 2021.
