No more foggy windows: This is how to prevent moisture from entering your car | car

Darkening car windows is annoying. Without air conditioning, proper wiping with a dry cloth is required. In extreme cases, the interior should also be scratched in case of frost. But how does this condensation form and how can you remove it quickly? We give eight tips.

In cold, humid seasons, windows fog up more quickly because cold air stores less moisture than warm air. Especially at night, moisture entering the car through clothes and shoes condenses on cold windows. Once moisture gets into a car, it doesn’t simply disappear. Certainly not in cars that are rarely driven. It is often the second car in the family that suffers the most. After all, cars that are driven a lot dehydrate themselves through prolonged heater and air conditioning use.

Besides physics, there is another reason: neglect. With a little care, a few simple steps and the right accessories, problems can be solved quickly. If your windows continue to fog up after following the tips below, only a garage can help. For example, if the seals on the doors, windows or sunroof are porous or torn, they should be replaced.

Tip 1: Keep drains clean

When storm drains become clogged with dirt and leaves, water accumulates. It often leaks inside over time. Exhaust ducts are located between the windshield and the hood, in the sunroof, and sometimes also at the rear of the car. This is often enough to remove dirt. Then check with a little water whether the water flows away.

Tip 2: Replace the internal filter

A clogged cabin filter can also cause moisture in the car. Dust and dirt ensure that air can no longer circulate perfectly. In addition, fungi and bacteria are given a chance, making a dirty pollen filter a health hazard. A new filter costs about 15 euros. High-quality activated carbon filters not only filter pollen and dust, but also filter out nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the air.

Tip 3: Let the moisture out

Make sure the ventilation ducts are open and the ventilation is not in recirculation mode, as this will not cause the car to bleed. Turn on ventilation and heating – warm air absorbs more moisture than cold air. In addition, it is useful to open windows briefly in between to allow moist air to escape.

Tip 4: Use air conditioning

Although many people only use the air conditioner for cooling in the summer, it should also be used regularly in the winter. This lubricates the seals, prevents bacteria build-up and unpleasant odors and increases their life. In addition, air conditioning removes moisture from the air more effectively than heating.

Tip 5: Keep the car dry

To keep the car dry, remove wet clothes before riding. Place wet coats in the trunk so the seat upholstery does not absorb moisture. If necessary, remove wet floor mats from the vehicle to dry them. If you have a dry parking lot or garage, you can leave the window open to ventilate the car.

Tip 6: Use a dehumidifier

Special moisture absorbing products are available to dry humid indoor air. These special cushions cost around 10 euros and can be placed indoors. It removes moisture from the air, and once full, it can be dried on the stove and used again. Alternatively, kitty litter can be stuffed into an old sock and placed in the car, but this product cannot be reused and is less effective.

Seventh tip: A little shampoo

You can scrub the inside of your car’s windshield against steam deposits using a little detergent or shampoo.

Tip 8: Maintenance

If the gaskets and rubber become porous, moisture can penetrate here as well. To prevent this, they can be kept flexible with proper care. Talcum powder, Vaseline or other special care products are suitable for this purpose.
