There was no winner in Koeibeji, after an entertaining football match and another crazy final stage. Westerlo overcame a 0-1 deficit before the end of the first half. STVV did the same in the second half. Top scorer Quetta increased his total to ten strikes and the score went from 2-1 to 2-3. STVV appeared to have returned to Limburg with full spoils, but a deflected ball from Freegan ensured a fair split of the points in stoppage time.
Two teams that love to play football had an entertaining first half. Westerlo immediately tried to put pressure on STVV, but were caught cold when Bokat scored a 0-1 equalizer after just five minutes. However, it did not take long before the boards were level again. Sidorchuk first hit the wooden goal, but Perm was accurate with the rebound. The defender who took the lead kicked in the 1-1 scoreline under Suzuki.
This equalizer gave Westerlo new courage. The home team pressed for some time, but STVV managed to regain its balance. Until Nicolas Madsen got the ball in front of his feet on the edge of the large rectangle. The Danish midfielder calmly put the scoreline at 2-1 to Suzuki. The pace dropped and Westerlo calmly maintained their lead until the end of the first half.
The same pattern of play after the end of the first half. Westerlo took the lead immediately, but STVV played well under pressure. The Limburgers also took advantage of their chance. Zahir Islam tried with a low shot, but Polat saved the situation. On the other hand, Haidara tried from afar, but his shot did not go far beyond the crossbar.
Both teams kept each other off balance, but it was still interesting. Clearly, the Limburgers were not giving up. DeLorge hit Bulat’s fists again. A goal hung in the air, but it was VAR that declared a draw. Bayram touched the ball with his arm, and referee LaForge was called to the screen and put the ball on the penalty spot. This rule can be debated, but Quetta did not hesitate and slotted the penalty high into the net: 2-2.
What followed was, as has been the case so often this season, another crazy final stretch. Perm made an unnecessary mistake on the sixteen-metre edge. A right shot into the hands of Abubakar Quetta, who smashed the free kick beautifully over the defensive wall in the 88th minute: 2-3. Westerlo successfully repelled the final attack and equalized in stoppage time. Boss kicks the goal and his shot disappears into the goal with Freegan’s foot: 3-3!
And it’s not over yet, because Westerlo also called for a penalty kick. Freegan was taken down, and referee LaForge had to go to the screen again, but in the end he saw no problem. Which angered the masses of the country. So it remained at Quibeyi with the points split – on the whole – justified after an enjoyable evening of football.
