North Korea launched another ballistic missile today. This was reported by the South Korean military, according to the Yonhap news agency. Pyongyang fired the missile into the Sea of Japan.
On Thursday, Pyongyang did indeed launch a long-range missile, which it says is a Hwasong-17. As far as is known, this is the largest intercontinental ballistic missile in the country’s possession. The launch came after the start of joint military exercises being conducted by the United States and South Korea, and also came before summit talks between South Korean President Yun Sok Yul and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
On Friday, North Korea described the US-South Korean military exercises as “provocative and aggressive”. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un accuses the United States and South Korea of stirring up tensions with the military exercises it has been conducting since Monday, dubbed “Freedom Shield”.
The exercises are the largest joint military exercises between the two countries in five years. Allies said its focus was on strengthening South Korea’s defenses against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
North Korea conducted a record number of missile tests last year and has already launched several missiles this year.
