Not Swiss enough: The Matterhorn is no longer allowed on Toblerone packaging

BBC reported that a producer of pyramid-shaped chocolate bars The packaging will change. Mondelez, the company behind Toblerone, says it’s replacing the image of the Matterhorn with a “generic mountain”.

Mondelez says it is obligated to do so, due to Swiss rules from 2017. It states that dairy products that are not made exclusively in Switzerland are not allowed to display Swiss iconography. For other food products, an 80 percent limit applies.

Toblerone has been around for 115 years. “Mountain” chocolate first appeared on the market in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland. Meanwhile, part of the chocolate is no longer made in the country, which is why the rules for “Swissness” apply to the company.

The format has been modified

Mondelez said in a statement to BBC News that it had to move production “to meet global demand and grow the brand in the future”.

In 2016, the company adapted the format of Toblerone in the UK. The distance between the highlighted triangles has been increased to save costs. After much ado, this change was reversed two years later.
