Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met former US President Donald Trump on Friday evening. Trump welcomed him at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach. US President Joe Biden has severely criticized this meeting.
Biden spoke at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. “You know who he's meeting today? Orban from Hungary says he doesn't think democracy will work. He's looking for a dictatorship,” Biden said.
The US president is at odds with the current Hungarian government, Orban. Despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Hungary is the only member of the EU with ties to the Kremlin.
In October, Orban spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin in China. His country is highly dependent on oil and gas supplies from Russia.
Hungary has also been at odds with NATO several times in recent months. Orban wants to put more pressure on Ukraine to negotiate a ceasefire or peace deal with Russia.
Orban expects more support for Trump if he becomes president
Peace talks have stalled for a long time. The previously drawn up Ukrainian peace plan states, among other things, that Russia withdraw from all occupied Ukrainian territory and that Russia recognize all Ukrainian territory as Ukraine. It seems that successful peace negotiations are a utopia.
If Trump is re-elected, Orban expects his stance on forcing Ukraine to negotiate will gain more support. Trump generally hates foreign military commitments and wants the government to stop making loans to other countries under strict conditions.
So the Hungarian Prime Minister is a supporter of Trump. She is supporting him in his re-election bid later this year. “We hope the current president will leave and Trump will return,” Orban said last month.
On Friday, Orban called Trump “a kindred spirit who, like him, wants to end the war in Ukraine.” Trump, who said last year that he wanted to resolve the war in Ukraine in one day, has not elaborated further.
Trump and Orban spoke for an hour. The Hungarian Prime Minister also received a tour of the building, followed by dinner and a concert. This will be the third time that the two leaders will meet.
A campaign war is brewing between Biden and Trump
The US presidential election will be held in November. It will certainly happen between Trump and Biden, and all the other candidates have dropped out of the race or have no voters to support them.
Biden used his State of the Union address Thursday to lash out at Trump. He said his political rival was a danger to freedom at home and abroad.
The State of the Union is considered the most important political speech of the year in the United States and is generally used to tell the American people what the country is like and what its policy goals are.
