House Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi is still confident her party will retain the majority. “We still think we have a chance to win,” Pelosi told CNN on Sunday.
Not all votes were counted in Tuesday’s by-election. Currently, Republicans hold 211 and Democrats hold 203 of the 218 seats needed for a majority. 17 seats are still to be filled. Most polls predict a narrow majority for the Republican Party.
“There’s still a lot of votes to count,” Pelosi, 82, said before comparing it to the Olympics: “Within half a second it’s gold, silver or bronze.”
The current leader of House Democrats has not yet said whether he will seek re-election as leader. With this, he waits till it is known who will get the majority in this by-election. Traditionally, the House parties of Republicans and Democrats hold internal elections for party leadership after the midterms.
