Watch: Kids react to the first trailer for The Little Mermaid
In the latest release of Disney Classic the little Mermaid Ariel played Halle Bailey (22), a black actress who also starred in a TV series grown nest. At D23, the entertainment giant first released a trailer for the highly anticipated movie. This is now creating emotional images in many families. On various social media, especially via TikTok, photos have since spread widely of children suddenly acquainted with the famous Disney princess. “Mom, it’s black!” And “She looks like me,” it sounds like in countless videos.
Lead actress Bailey also commented on the trailer and accompanying reaction videos via Twitter: “People have been sending me comments like this all weekend and I’m really overwhelmed. It means a lot to me.”
The hoped-for reactions for the young children stand in stark contrast to the criticism the film received once it became known that Billy would play Ariel. After all, The Underwater Princess is based on a fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, and according to some online critics, a black actress must suddenly play the role of a red-haired white mermaid.
