During Mass on Christmas Eve, Pope Francis (86) drew attention to the poor and those affected by the war. While the pope did not specifically mention Ukraine during the traditional evening mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, he did say that the world’s greed and lust for power are so great that some “devour even their neighbours”.
The Pope spoke against wars in general. “How many wars have we seen? And how many places, even today, are human dignity and freedom treated with disdain?”
Francis has stated repeatedly in recent months that he sees the war in Ukraine as “brutal and cruel” and is often critical of Russia. He has previously spoken of “horrific” and unprovoked aggression. Earlier this month, the pope also called on everyone to spend less on Christmas shopping and instead help Ukrainians get through winter.

In addition, the Pope addressed the poor and powerless, who are the main victims of greed. He also expressed his discontent with a world “thirsty for money and power.”
It was the first Christmas two years after the Corona measures that St. Peter’s Basilica was well filled again. There were 7,000 people in the church and another 4,000 people followed the mass in the square. On Sunday, the pope will announce his blessing, European and European, from the balcony of the church.
