Prince Harry must reveal devastating letters

Britain’s Prince Harry must explain to a judge why letters he exchanged with his memoirist were destroyed. British media said during a hearing in his case against British publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) that the Duke of Sussex had also been instructed to try to retrieve the letters.

This concerns text messages, emails and messages on applications such as WhatsApp and Signal between 2005 and 2023. NGN states that the last three years in particular may be relevant to the case, because Harry reportedly wrote in his book that newspapers from the publisher had already obtained unauthorized information before 2013. A claim for damages in these types of cases must be brought within Six years and Harry only went to court in 2019. In that case, the prince would be too late.

The British prince is one of more than 40 people who have sued NGN for allegedly misrepresenting information about them. Harry alleges, among other things, that the British tabloid The Sun hired private investigators in 2016 to stalk his wife, Meghan. He also claims that similar situations happened to his mother, Princess Diana, in 1994 and 1995.

NGN has tried to delay the matter before. The publisher filed a request this spring to determine whether the complainants filed their accusations within the specified time limit. The judge did not agree to this request and noted that the additional case would cause further delays and costs.
