filmThe Razzies, last year’s worst movie performance award, have apologized for nominating the 11-year-old actress. It’s about Brian Kira Armstrong, who was on the list of “The Worst Actress of the Year.” After a storm of criticism, the organization admitted that the nomination was extremely insensitive.
“Sometimes you do things without thinking,” John Wilson, co-founder of Razzies (The Golden Raspberry Awards) said in a statement. “The recent justified criticism of the selection of 11-year-old Armstrong as a nominee for one of our awards has reminded us how insensitive we are to this state of affairs. As a result, we have removed Armstrong’s name from the final ballot that our members will vote on next month.” He continued: “We feel we owe a public apology to Ms. Armstrong and are sorry that she was hurt by our choices. We learned from this.”
So Wilson announces a new rule: “Artists and directors under the age of 18 will not be eligible for our awards.” He further states that there was never any intention to “endanger anyone’s life”. “This is why the Savior Award was created. We all make mistakes and so do we. Own your bad,” the organization concludes. “We know we have to live up to that.
Not the first time
Ryan Kira Armstrong is best known for starring in Firestarter, the movie adaptation of the book by Stephen King. She is not the first young actress to be nominated for a Razzie Awards. In 1995, 15-year-old Macaulay Culkin was nominated several times.
The Golden Raspberry Awards winners are announced the day before the Academy Awards are presented. This year the ceremony will take place on March 11th. Tom Hanks and Pete Davidson, among others, have a shot at winning an award.
