Last year, 9,816 complaints were filed with the Federal Public Service Economy about unwanted business calls from people on the Do Not Call list. This list provides the option not to receive advertising calls from companies that engage in direct marketing. “The system is overstepping its target,” says N-VA MP Anneline van Bossuyt.
In total, the list included about 1,542,015 people on January 1, 2024. Of these, 9,816 had filed complaints, according to figures requested by Van Bossuyt. This is a record number since the implementation of the Do Not Call List in 2015.
“Anyone who signs up has no guarantee that they won't be harassed,” says Van Bossuyt. “Operators are required to inform their users (…) that they can object to the use of their numbers for marketing purposes.” But that's not enough, says Van Bossuyt. “The problem is that companies do not adhere to the list.”
Van Bossuyt opts for an “opt-in system,” where you must explicitly indicate that you want to receive advertising calls from companies.
