In March, the annual electricity contract price was 1,468 euros, but it has now increased to 2,154 euros. If we compare the price with the price a year ago, then we are talking about more than double.
Gas has also become more expensive. If you conclude an annual contract in June, you have paid 2151.65 euros, but at the same time this is already 3791.1 euros, an increase of 1639.45 euros. The numbers only take into account who should enter the trading market in August. This relates to the estimated annual rate from August 2022 to July 2023. Those with a social rate, for example, pay much less.
In addition, the situation does not promise to improve any time soon. Quite the contrary. The price of European gas continues to appear, as yesterday was offered 250 euros per megawatt-hour, which is an all-time record and much more than what was recorded after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The price of electricity also hit a new record after that. According to Russian state supplier Gazprom – which controls supply to Europe – the price of gas could rise by another half this winter. Something that Thijs van de Graaf (UGent), a professor of international energy policy, does not call unrealistic.
